Nature's Organic Lovin' - Bees, Honey and Beeswax
The Pretty Little Bees
There is often a fallacy which leads many of us to be afraid of bees. It's similar to the prevalent fear of snakes, and in my life that's been a learned-fear. My grandmother and mother were severely afraid of them. We've learned to fear them through lineage or often because of what we know about their threat-tactics and defense capabilities. Although, like within many of us, there is so much more going on behind the scenes. Bees are a very important part of the reason plants can reproduce. The worker bees become covered in pollen while extracting a flower's nectar, then travel to other flowers and plants, cross-pollenating. This process is essential to the longevity and organic nature of plant life. The bees take the nectar to the hive, slowly building the honeycomb and filling it with nectar. The water-content within the nectar evaporates and turns to honey. The honey in all Savannah Bee Company products is pure and poured directly into bottles from the hives. Talk about raw and organic! The Honeycomb Beeswax The deepest inner-workings of the flower, transformed by bees. It's no wonder beeswax is so healthy and nourishing for our bodies. Beeswax (from the honeycomb) acts as a protective layer on the skin, keeping irritants and allergens from penetrating the pores, while also trapping in moisture and keeping the skin from becoming dry. It's a great additive to any homemade body product. Beeswax also carries Vitamin A, which means softer skin. Both beeswax and honey have been scientifically proven to be anti-bacterial, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungus. Nectar Turns to Honey Honey has also been a common feature in many health and beauty magazines (face masks, acne treatment, pore cleansers, etc), and there's a good reason for it. As mentioned above, it has proven anti-bacterial properties, but also antioxidant properties. This helps enhance skin cell rejuvenation, gradually slowing the signs of aging...at the very least offering a bright and healthy glow! Wouldn't you rather put natural honey on your body rather than man-made chemicals that may or may not have long-term questionable affects? We talk about alignment a lot in yoga, but it's also important to feel aligned with yourself and your environment in every-day life. I feel more in sync with my environment when I use small parts of nature on the daily. A part of me craves it. Savannah Bee Company - Handcrafted Bee Products
Savannah Bee's body lotions are like ecstasy in a bottle, I'm really not over-exaggerating! When I tried it for the first time, I was blown away with it's smooth, light texture, its cooling and calming scent, and it's ability to moisturize and often my skin. There's no lingering oily feel what-so-ever. It's silky, organic and 100% amazing.
The lemongrass and spearmint scents couldn't be more perfect for me. In Ayurveda-speak, I always lean toward more of a Pitta dosh (especially body-type). Pitta's are often hot and energetic, often needing cooling and sharp adjustments to find balance. The spearmint and lemongrass scents could not be more right-on for aromatherapy affects of the Pitta. It's especially nice in summer-time, arousing a cool, soft and refreshing aura all around me. Pure ingredients are used including raw honey, beeswax, aloe vera juice, coconut oil, sunflower oil, argan oil. There just isn't a better combination of skin-loving ingredients. There are so many honey and beeswax products that I could discuss in this blog, but honestly...I live in the desert, so we are going to talk about one in-particular, lotion!
Every since I moved out west, lotion (and lip balm - ask anyone who visits me) is an essential part of my routine. The winter season in Wyoming is the harshest, with low humidity, extremely dry air, strong winds and cold temperatures. Spring and summer a little better, but this area transitions from somewhat-damp to crispy-dry within a few weeks in June. Moisturizing my body is essential for staying comfortable and smooth all year. I've spent most of my life trying several different brands and styles of lotions. And honestly, I've become quite picky. The two main problems with lotions are the lingering oily-feel and the too-perfumey scents. None have really satisfied my craving for a soft moisturizer with an organic feel. Last year, I tried making my own using coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter, but I found it difficult to get the consistency right while trying to avoid an oily base. I've since been on the search for something better. Enter Savannah Bee's Lemongrass Spearmint Body Lotion..... I stumbled across Savannah Bee Company just by searching for natural and organic body products online. They are quite popular in the natural wellness world, and are based out of the lovely, humid and warm climate of Georgia. USA-made and proud of it.
How can it be a candle AND lotion at the same time? Well, that's because it's beeswax. This luscious blend burns as a lovely candle, while also providing a source of warm and smooth lotion. It's similar to the body lotions, but just present in another form.
This can especially be fun to play with when giving someone else (or yourself) a massage. It's warm, soft, moisturizing and smells so lovely! Or simply use it as a candle, your choice!
